Ofcom maps UK Internet infrastructure
Ofcom has come up with a map that shows the distribution of broadband and the available speeds around the UK. The clickable map allows users to see various statistics for Internet connectivity in local authority areas across the country.
Areas are ranked by four basic criteria: average broadband takeup, percentage of users receiving speeds of less than 2 Mbit/s, availability of superfast broadband and average modem sync speeds. Areas are colour coded, with green denoting areas with fast connections/high availability and red denoting slow connections/low availability.
Edinburgh came out with the best Internet speeds, with an average sync speed of 10.1 Mbit/s. It also came out with the lowest rate of people achieving speeds of under 2 Mbit/s, the speed which the government aims for all households and businesses to be able to achieve by 2015. The government also aims for all local authority areas to have at least 90% availability of super-fast broadband. Only 39 areas have this so far with two, Luton and Newtonabbey, having 100% availability.
